Lesson planning just got a massive upgrade. Wordwall's AI feature is a powerful content generation feature integrated directly into our activity editor. It allows you to transform a simple topic, a paragraph of text, or a document into a fully playable interactive game in seconds.
Available AI-supported templates
As of 2026, Wordwall AI is compatible with our most popular templates. These are categorized by how the AI generates the data:
1. Quiz & arcade templates
These templates use AI to generate multiple-choice questions with one correct answer and several distractors.
Quiz - the classic assessment format
Gameshow Quiz - a high-energy TV-style competition
Maze Chase - a Pac-man style game with quiz questions
Airplane - fly through clouds to hit the right answer
Whack-a-mole - hit the correct answers as they pop up
Unjumble - reorder words
- Type the Answer – a quiz format where students must manually type the correct answer rather than picking from a list
- Speaking Cards – deals out cards with prompts or questions to encourage verbal response and discussion
- True or False – statements fly across the screen; you must decide if they are factually correct or incorrect before they disappear
- Flying Fruit – pop the fruit that contains the correct answer to the question displayed
2. Matching & vocabulary templates
The AI generates pairs of items, such as a keyword and its definition or a word and its translation.
Match Up - drag and drop each keyword next to its corresponding definition
Find the Match - tap the matching answer to clear it from the screen
Flashcards - a classic study tool with a prompt on the front and an answer on the back
Matching Pairs - a fast-paced race to connect all pairs before time runs out
Open the Box - tap boxes one by one to reveal the items inside
- Pair or No Pair – determine quickly whether the shown pair is a correct match or a mismatch
- Balloon Pop – use a slingshot to pop balloons and drop keywords onto their matching definitions
- Spin the Wheel – spin a wheel of items to select one at random for the student to define or translate
3. Sorting & classification templates
The AI identifies logical categories and assigns specific items to each group.
Group Sort - drag each item into its correct category box
Speed Sorting - tap a tile to reveal the hidden item and find its pair
Rank Order - arrange items in the correct sequence or hierarchy based on the AI-generated list
Word Magnets - drag and arrange words or phrases on a virtual board
4. Word & puzzle templates
The AI generates a themed list of words and (optionally) provides clues for each.
Anagram - drag the letters into their correct positions to unscramble the word
Wordsearch - find the hidden words within a grid of letters
Crossword - use the AI-generated clues to fill in the intersecting grid
Complete the Sentence - a cloze activity where you drag words into the correct blanks
Hangman - guess the letters to uncover the hidden word before the gallows are completed
Spell the Word - listen to or look at a prompt and arrange the letters to spell the word correctly
Semi-automated / "Switchable" templates
These templates don't always have a "Generate" button directly, but because they use the same underlying data structure as the templates above, you can use AI to create a Quiz and then use the Switch Template panel on the right side of the screen to turn it into one of these:
Spin the Wheel - spin the wheel to select a random item from your list
Labelled Diagram - drag and drop labels onto the correct parts of an image
Flip Tiles - tap to flip over tiles and reveal the content underneath
Non-AI templates (manual only)
These templates are either highly visual, sequence-based, or require specific manual placement that currently does not support automated AI generation.
Image Quiz - a large image is slowly revealed tile-by-tile
Rank Order - organize items based on a specific sequence or correct order
Seating Plan - visualize your classroom layout, manage student behavior, and organize group work effectively
Categorize - sort a series of items into their respective groups as they appear. (Discontinued)
General use of the AI feature:
You don't need to be a prompt expert to use our AI. It is designed to be intuitive and accessible from within the activity creator.
-
Click on Create Activity and choose any of our AI-supported templates (e.g., Quiz, Match Up, etc.).
-
Look for the "Generate with AI" button (often marked with a ✨ or a magic wand icon) at the top of the content editor.
- Enter your content:
- Topic: Type a subject like "Photosynthesis" or "French irregular verbs."
- Text/Notes: Paste a paragraph from a textbook or a news article.
- File: Upload a PDF or Word document for the AI to analyze.
-
Click Generate. Review the questions, make any manual tweaks, and hit Done.
💡 Pro-Tip: How to check if a template has AI?
When you open any template to edit it, look at the top right corner of the content table.
If you see the ✨ Generate or Magic Wand icon, that template is AI-ready.
If you don't see it, we recommend creating the content in the Quiz or Match Up template first using AI, then using the Switch Template sidebar to convert it to your desired format.
