✍️ How to create a Complete the Sentence activity

Complete the Sentence template (also known as "fill-in-the-blanks" or a cloze test) is a powerful way to assess reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary in context.

How the activity is played

The game presents a passage of text with visible "gaps" and a word bank at the top or side.

• The interaction: The student drags the missing words from the word bank and drops them into the correct blank spaces.

• Submission: Once every gap on the page is filled, the student clicks the Submit Answers button.

• Feedback: The system marks the answers immediately. If correct, the student moves to the next page of text.

• The result: On the final screen, students can review their accuracy and submit their scores to the Leaderboard.

Creating your Complete the Sentence activity

1. Click Create Activity and choose Complete the Sentence.

2. Type or paste your sentence or paragraph into the text box.

3. Highlight a word in your text and click the Add missing text button, or simply double-click the word you want to hide.

   • This word will now be moved to the "correct" word bank for that gap.

4. You can add incorrect words in the sidebar. These will appear in the word bank to make the activity more challenging.

5. Click Add a page or press Enter to add a new set of sentences.

6. Click Done to save.

   
    

7. Fine-tune the experience using the Options panel below the game:
   

• TIMER

  • None: No time limit is enforced, allowing students to read and process the text at their own pace.

  • Count up: Displays a stopwatch that measures exactly how long it takes a student to fill all the blanks and complete the pages.

  • Count down: Sets a strict time limit (e.g., 5 minutes) to challenge the student's reading fluency and speed.

• ALIGNMENT

  • Left: Positions your paragraph and the draggable word tiles starting from the left side of the screen.

  • Centered: Centers the paragraph in the middle of the play area for a balanced look.

• RANDOM

  • Shuffle item order: When enabled, your text pages will be shuffled and presented in a completely random sequence to students every time they launch the activity.

• END OF GAME

  • Show answers: Gives students the opportunity to review the completed, correct version of the passage once the activity ends, helping them analyze any mistakes they made.

Creating Complete the Sentence with AI

You don't need to be a prompt expert to use our AI. It is designed to be intuitive and accessible directly from the activity creator.

1. Click Create Activity and select Complete the Sentence.
   
   
    
2. Look for the ✨ Generate with AI button (magic wand icon) at the top right of the content editor.
   
   
3. Enter your content:
    
   • Topic: Type a subject like "Photosynthesis" or "French irregular verbs."
   • Text/Notes: Paste a paragraph from a textbook or a news article. The AI will analyze the text and automatically select contextually relevant keywords to hide as blanks.
   • File: Upload a PDF or Word doc. Wordwall AI will scan the text and generate a series of interactive, fill-in-the-blank text pages for you.
      
4. Click Generate. The AI will populate the page with your text and pre-selected missing words. Review them, make any manual tweaks, and hit Done.
