At Wordwall, we are constantly updating our platform to ensure our games are fast, secure, and compatible with the latest web browsers and devices. Occasionally, this means retiring older templates that no longer meet our performance standards or have been replaced by more advanced versions.
List of discontinued templates
As of the latest update, the following templates have been moved to our "Discontinued" list. While you may still see them in the Community or in your older folders, they are no longer available for new activity creation:
Categorize: A discussion-based sorting tool.
Unscramble: A template for reordering letters or words.
Groups & teams: A utility for organizing students into sets.
Seating plan: A classroom management tool for arranging desks.
Higher or lower: A game based on predicting numerical sequences.
Type the number: A specific input-based mathematical template.
Note: For the most up-to-date list, always check the Create Activity page. If a template is no longer listed in the "Standard" or "Pro" sections, it has been retired.
What happens to existing activities?
If you have already created activities using a template that is now discontinued, don't worry!
They still work: Your existing activities remain in your "My Activities" folder. You can still play them, share them with students, and assign them as homework.
Limited editing: You can still edit the text content of these activities. However, you may find that certain new "Options" or "Themes" are not compatible with these older formats.
No new creations: You cannot click "Create Activity" and start a new resource using a discontinued template.
What should I do instead?
We recommend migrating your content to our newer, supported templates for the best experience.
Use "Switch Template": Open your discontinued activity and look at the Switch Template panel on the right. Select a modern alternative (e.g., switch a Brainstorm to a Word Magnets or a Categorize activity).
Look for "Pro" Alternatives: Many legacy features have been rebuilt as "Pro" templates with better graphics, sound effects, and mobile responsiveness.
Check the Community: If you loved a specific discontinued style, search the Community page. Often, other teachers have found ways to replicate those game styles using newer templates like Quiz or Game Show Quiz.
Why do we discontinue templates?
Mobile Compatibility: Older templates were often designed for desktop screens and don't work well on modern tablets or phones.
Security: Retiring old code helps us keep the platform safe from modern web vulnerabilities.
Innovation: Removing older, less-popular templates allows our team to focus on building exciting new game formats that you and your students will love.
